If you’ve ever skipped a move in Pilates or swapped it for something that felt more doable, you’ve already made a modification. And if you’ve ever wondered whether that meant you were doing it “wrong,” you’re not alone.

Let’s set the record straight: a Pilates modification isn’t a cop-out. It’s how you adjust a movement to make it more accessible, more effective, or more appropriate for your body on a given day. And it’s a fundamental part of a smart, sustainable Pilates practice.

What are Pilates Modifications?

Pilates modifications are intentional changes to an exercise’s setup, range, intensity, or positioning. They’re not about making something easier, but rather making it work for your body.

Sometimes a modification means using a prop. Other times it means changing body position, reducing leverage, or performing part of a movement instead of the whole thing. It could look like bending the knees in a teaser, setting a hand on the mat for added stability during side lying exercises, or using a towel to assist in a roll up.

The goal of modified Pilates moves isn’t to “downgrade” the movement. It’s to meet your body where it is so you can build strength with control, instead of forcing your way through the movement.

Why Choose Pilates Modifications?

There are dozens of reasons to try Pilates modifications, and none of them are about being weak, new, or “behind.”

 People modify when they:

  • Are building up to a more complex variation

  • Feel discomfort or strain in a certain joint or area

  • Are working with less flexibility or mobility

  • Want to improve form or focus on one aspect of the move

  • Are tired, stiff, or simply not feeling 100% that day

Even elite athletes modify their workouts. Why? Because real progress comes from consistent, high-quality movement, not from pushing through pain or compromising form.

Tangible Pilates Modification Examples

Let’s say you’re doing a Pilates roll-up and you can’t lift all the way off the mat without yanking your neck or jerking your arms. A smart Pilates adjustment would be to bend your knees or use a resistance band to help guide yourself upwards. The purpose of the exercise is still the same: articulating the spine and engaging the core, but now you’re doing it well – not just doing it.

Or picture side-lying leg lifts. If your neck starts to ache, you might prop your head up with a pillow or towel, or come down to lie flat completely. That small change makes it easier to focus on your alignment and focus the effort on the muscles you should be using to accomplish the movement, rather than straining your neck.

Another example? Planks. If a full plank causes wrist pain or core strain, modify to forearms or come to your knees to keep the focus on form and stability.

Think of Pilates modifications as adjustments that help you train smarter.

Who Benefits From Pilates Modifications?

Everyone. Seriously.

  • Beginners use modifications to learn good mechanics and avoid overload as they build strength and familiarity with an exercise.

  • Returning movers (after time of or injury) rely on them to ease back in safely.

  • Experienced practitioners use them to isolate certain muscles or refine technique.

  • Busy people appreciate having choices when their energy is low but they still want to move.

Pilates modifications make exercises more accessible, not less effective. They ensure that you’re doing what’s best for your body on any given day so you can keep showing up tomorrow.
