Flat lay of what to wear to Pilates class including sage green leggings, sports bra, grip socks, and hoodie
Everything you need for your first Pilates class — and nothing you don't.

You signed up for your first Pilates class (or downloaded an app) and now you're standing in front of your closet thinking: what do I even wear to this? Do I need special leggings? Grip socks? A unitard?

Relax. You probably already own everything you need. Here's a quick guide so you can stop overthinking it and start moving.

What to Wear to Pilates

  • Fitted top: a t-shirt or tank that stays put when you're upside down. Loose shirts ride up during roll-ups and inversions, which is annoying and distracting.

  • Leggings or fitted pants: you want to see your alignment (knees over ankles, hips level). Baggy sweats hide your form, which makes it harder to learn properly.

  • Comfortable undergarments: a supportive sports bra is important. You'll be rolling, bridging, and moving in ways that test unsupportive options.

What to Skip

  • Zippers, buttons, or buckles: anything that digs into your body when you're lying on your back or stomach.

  • Shoes: Pilates is done barefoot or in grip socks. Regular sneakers don't belong here.

  • Jewelry: rings, bracelets, and necklaces can get caught or dig into your skin during exercises.

  • Super loose clothing: you need to be able to see (and feel) your body working. Save the oversized hoodie for the drive home.

Do You Need Grip Socks?

For mat Pilates at home? Not really. Bare feet work great on a mat. For studio classes or reformer work, grip socks help you stay stable on slippery surfaces. They're a nice-to-have, not a must-have (some studios require them - so always check).

Fabric Matters More Than Brand

Skip cotton for your bottoms — it absorbs sweat and gets heavy. Moisture-wicking fabrics (polyester blends, nylon, or spandex) keep you comfortable and allow you to move freely. You don't need expensive Pilates-specific gear. Target, Old Navy, and Amazon all have options that work perfectly.

What Prompt Pilates Does Differently

Since Prompt Pilates is designed for home, your outfit requirements are minimal. No grip socks needed, no dress code. Just throw on something fitted and comfortable, roll out a mat (or a workout on a rug that won't slide around), and you're ready to go.

The Bottom Line

Wear something fitted, comfortable, and free of hardware. Bare feet or grip socks. That's it. Don't let a wardrobe question stop you from starting.
